Baking :: Cinnamon Bun Cookies



...mmm orange spice tea in a real tea cup, fresh from the oven cinnamon bun cookies {recipe here, thanks Madelyn}, and a quiet house on a Sunday afternoon. What could be better than that?

{ mmm lemon }

So, I made 2 of these cakes today and spent more time trying to take a picture of this one than it did to make them! I came to the conclusion, with the help of Madelyn, that I need a camera with a bigger aperture if I want to take close up photos with a blurry background. I should have put some lemons in the photo. Oh well... next time!

Luscious Lemon Cake (recipe from kraftcanada.com)

1 pkg. (2-layer size) lemon cake mix

2 pkg. (4-serving size each) JELL-O Lemon Instant Pudding
1-1/2 cups cold milk
3 cups thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping

PREPARE and bake cake mix as directed on package for 2 (8- or 9-inch) round cake layers. Cool completely.

BEAT milk and pudding mixes with whisk 2 min. Immediately spread over tops of cake layers.

STACK cake layers. Frost with Cool Whip. Keep refrigerated.

{ a day late }

Hello,

I know I said I would show you this yesterday and I'm sure you've all been holding your breath in suspense! (or not) Anyway, look at my lovely new, built in 1936, Singer sewing machine! Now I just need one of those old irons to go with it.

Isn't it nice?! It was given to me by a complete stranger... on freecycle. I love it!

{ four hours later }

So, this morning daughter #2 wanted to listen to a song she learned at school. I found it for her online and wouldn't you know it, our computer speakers would not work ... other than a loud buzzing sound. Off we went to the garage in search of our old {perfectly good} speakers. Four hours later I returned with no speakers, but I did come back with this adorable metal birdy apron hanger for the kitchen, and I left behind a much, much, much cleaner garage! Wow, that was a lot of work, but it was worth the effort. Who knew we had such a spacious garage?

Oh, by the way, I can't wait to show you the amazing gift I was given today {by a complete stranger}. Come back tomorrow to find out what it is! In the meantime, feel free to leave a comment with your guess. :)

{ circle farm tour }

Hello!

Yesterday Rhonda and I decided to pack up all the kids and take them on a field trip. We went to a couple farms on a Circle Farm Tour. Our first stop was Farm House Cheeses in Agassiz. We thought we'd be able to take their tour, but unfortunately they weren't doing tours because of the weather. (hello! it was just drizzling... we get drizzle in the summer, too) So, instead of touring, we shopped for cheese.

Next stop was Honeyview Farm in Rosedale. Again - no tours happening, and no bees to be seen, so what's a girl to do? Shop, of course. We picked up some Creamed Clover Blossom Honey and Blueberry Blossom Honey as well as an assortment of little jars of assorted honey for my Mom & Dad.



This morning daughter #1 made biscuits to have with our honey... since we are out of bread. Home made biscuits are better than grocery store bread any day! I was going to tell you all about the old cookbook my biscuit recipe comes from, but the covers are missing and google isn't helping! So, I'll just post the recipe for you:

Tea Biscuits

Preheat oven to 425 F

Sift together:
2 cups all purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

With a pastry blender or two knives cut in finely:

1/2 cup shortening (I use real butter, straight from the fridge so it's nice and hard)

Add:

1 cup milk

Stir with a fork to make a soft dough. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently 8 to 10 times. Roll or pat to desired thickness (biscuits will double in height when baked).

Cut with a floured 1 3/4-inch cookie cutter (I use a glass). Place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet, close together for soft-sided biscuits or about 1 inch apart for crusty-sided biscuits.

Bake in preheated 425 F oven for 12 to 15 minutes.

Makes 20 biscuits.


Enjoy with fresh farm honey and a glass of milk!

{ blue gingham }

Hello,

Here's an adorably sweet blue gingham dress I made for my daughter. She is in love with it and has been running around pretending to be Laura Ingalls. Next I will be making a white eyelet apron and a flowered blue bonnet to go with it. We picked up the neatest little pair of lace up boots to go with this costume... for $1! You can't beat that. :)
