Baking :: Sour Cream Sugar Cookies

This morning I was blog browsing and came across this recipe for Sour Cream Sugar Cookies on Kristina Werner's amazing blog so I decided to make them for a baby shower.

Sour Cream Sugar Cookies Recipe

Sour Cream Sugar Cookies
1-1/2 cups sugar (I keep my used vanilla beans in my sugar jar for extra vanilla-y cookies)
1 cup butter
1 egg
2 tsp vanilla extract (or vanilla scraped from one vanilla bean)
1 cup sour cream
4-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

1. Cream together sugar and butter. Add egg, vanilla, and sour cream. Add dry ingredients. Mix well, but only until flour is incorporated.
2. Refrigerate and shape.
3. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 425° for 5 minutes (or longer if they're a bit thicker... just watch the first batch and then adjust the cooking time accordingly).

Martha Stewart's Royal Icing:

Makes 2 1/3 cups
  • 3 1/2 cups icing sugar
  • 5 tablespoons meringue powder, or 2 large egg whites
  • water

  1. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine sugar and meringue powder. Mixing on low speed, add a scant 1/2 cup water. For a thinner consistency, usually used for flooding, add more water. A thicker consistency is generally used for outlining and adding details. Mix until icing holds a ribbon-like trail on the surface of the mixture for 5 seconds when you raise the paddle.
Merry Christmas!

{ our snowy house }

Here's a picture of our snowy house (taken yesterday). It's now raining, so the snow is all slushy and gross, but it looked pretty over the weekend.

If anyone needs our new address (you know, to send us a Christmas card wink ) please email me and I'll give it to you.

{ stamping in the snow }

Wow, what a gorgeous snowy day! Here's a cute advent calendar I made today and last night while watching the snow fall. I got the idea from Beate's tutorial on and pretty much copied it. :-)

ETA: Here's a tip... if you're going to make one of these advent calendars do not laminate any part of it! I laminated the squares and everything is falling off now. I may try crystal effects or crazy glue to get it to hold.

{ verve visual rocks }

Wow! What a fun treat I received in my mailbox today! Julee sent me this gorgeous card and her brand new stamp set Starlight Starbright to thank me for being her Guest Designer this month! Thank you so much, Julee! I've been having tons of fun playing with your stamps and can't wait to see what new designs you come out with each month.

I just have to tell you... these stamps are an amazingly good deal and so versatile. And the quality is superb! Verve Visual's stamps are real red rubber... deeply etched and stamp perfectly every time. And they are only $10 US for a stamp set! You can't beat that.

{ try this challenge #3 }

Good Monday Morning!

Are you ready for our third Try This Challenge?! This week Nancy over at Nancy's Creative Mess is challenging us all to come up with a gift card holder. To participate in this challenge all you need to do is create a gift card holder of some sort and upload it to your blog or the scs gallery with the keyword TTC3. Then post a comment either on this post or on Nancy's challenge post so we can all take a peek at your creation.

Here's what I came up with. I hope you like it! To create this card I started with a 4" x 9" piece of card stock and scored it at 3" and 6". I then stamped the front of the panel with a Lizzie Anne paisley - so cute - I love that stamp! For the main flower image (also a Lizzie Anne stamp), I stamped it with Cranberry Crisp on Confetti White card stock and while the ink was still wet I went over it with a wet aquapainter to move the color around.

I created a pocket inside for the gift card by cutting the corner off and folding the flap in, adhering it with double sided tape.

The "Birthday Wishes" image is a newly released stamp from Verve Visual! I'm so excited that I was given the opportunity to be a Guest Designer for Verve Visual for the month of November. Thank you so much Julee. I've really been enjoying creating with your stamps!

Have a great week everyone! I can't wait to see your gift card holders.

{ try this challenge #2 }

Well, it's Monday and that means it's time for Nancy and I to challenge you! This time Nancy has come up with a challenge for us all to try. The challenge is to use punches in a creative way on a card. Please head over to Nancy's blog to find out all the details and to see her cute card!

Here is Jill's card for the challenge! What a creative use of punches!

Since we're moving in a couple of weeks my stamping room is all packed up... so, sadly, I won't have anything to post for this challenge! If you participate please let me or Nancy know by leaving a comment in either of our posts with a link to your card.

Have a great week!

{ my verve visual cards }

Here are the cards I made for Verve Visual!

I'm off to the Circle Craft Christmas Market in Vancouver this afternoon with friends - should be fun!

The Creative Expo yesterday at the Tradex was OK... not nearly as good as the last craft event I went to at the Tradex, though. In fact, I didn't buy a thing... and I didn't do the one thing I wanted to do which was the make & take at the Crafty Secrets booth with Sherrie. Every time I went by her table it was full. My daughter had a great time, though, so that is good. She did about 4 make & takes.

{ verve visual guest designer }

Good Morning!

Today is the day that Verve Visual is releasing two new stamp sets and revealing who their two guest designers are for November. One of the guest designers is Susan Liles (congratulations Susan!) and the second one is.... me! How exciting! It was a lot of fun working with Julee's new stamps and coming up with a few designs for her. Thanks for the opportunity, Julee!

Be sure to head on over to Verve Visual to see the 2 awesome new stamps sets and the gorgeous samples that the entire design team have created.

This afternoon I'm off to a Creative Expo with my Mom, Sister & Aunt. I can't wait!

{ new look for winter }

Well, what do you think of my new look for winter? Just yesterday I emailed Dina over at Mama Dini's Digi-Sig Diner to ask her if she'd make me a snowflakey banner for my blog using the Stampin' Up! colours Purely Pomegranite, Sky Blue and Blue Bayou and this is what she came up with. Isn't it pretty?! I've been fiddling around with the colours on my blog and I can't decide if I want the background (the edges that are now Purely Pomegranite) to stay as they are or if they should be Blue Bayou or Soft Sky or another colour? Any ideas? Also, this mid-section is Soft Sky. Is it too hard to read? Would it be better if it were white? I'm open to your ideas and suggestions! I don't want to turn anyone away if it's hard on your eyes. :-)

Dina also made me a beautiful watermark to match the banner. You'll be seeing it on the next card I post!

{ we're moving }

So, have you heard the exciting news? We're buying a house this month! What's the first thing you do when you find out you're moving? Make cards, of course! I made 30 of these cards to announce our move and let our friends & relatives know our new address and phone number.

I love the neat design of this card. It's called a Z-Fold card. As you can see I used the cuttlebug for most of this card. The entire card base was put through the cuttlebug with a Big Shot embossing plate. The scalloped rectangle and circle were cut out and the rectangle was also embossed using my new nestabilities dies. You can get the nestabilities from Urban Trends if you're in the Abbotsford area. I LOVE these! It's a really economical way to get scalloped and straight edged shapes in a bunch of different sizes and they take up WAY less space than punches.

The "Our New Home" tag was cut out using a cuttlebug die. The house image on this card is from Stamping Bella and was purchased from Urban Trends. I colored it in with Stampin' Up! markers.

Don't forget to read the post below this one... Nancy and I are hosting a weekly paper crafting challenge and we'd love for you to participate! We have a really fun one up our sleeves for next Monday as well. I'll give you a hint... it's not going to be a sketch challenge.

PS. If you have any moving boxes I'd love to take them off your hands.

{ try this challenge #1 }

Good Monday Morning!

Nancy over at Nancy's Creative Mess and I are excited to be starting a new feature on our blogs! Each Monday morning we will be hosting a paper crafting challenge of some sort on our blogs.

The first "Try This Challenge" is to come up with a card using this sketch! This sketch is taken from a card I created recently (shown below). The exciting thing about this card is that it gives you a sneak peek of one of the Verve Visual stamp sets that is going to be released on November 10!

We would love it if you'd like to play with us too!!! Just create a card using this layout and link your card either in the comments for this post or the post Nancy has for this challenge. You can also post it over at Splitcoast Stampers if you want... just use TTC1 in your title so we can find it!

Play along... we'd love to see what you come up with!

{ beate's sketch challenge }

Here's a card I just made while making dinner and wondering if the power was going to come back on in time to finish cooking the whole chicken that's in the oven!

I used Beate's weekend sketch for the layout of this card and the SU card stock that Jill gave me today when we were having our stampy morning. The stamp is a Lizzie Anne stamp, which was a gift from Nancy.

Today I also finished 30 "Our New Home" cards! They're very cute, if I do say so myself. :-)

Have a great weekend!

{ sneak peeks }

You won't want to miss the Verve Visual sneak peeks over the next few days! They are releasing brand NEW stamp sets on November 10th... and maybe you'll see some samples from someone you know. *wink* *wink*

{ help me brainstorm? }

Sorry I don't have a new card to show you yet... I have been stamping like crazy, although you'd never know it from my blog. I have over 40 Christmas cards almost done.

I'm going to be opening a hair salon in a couple months and one of the first things I need to do is come up with a good name for it! I'd love to hear some ideas you may have. I don't want my name in the salon name. I'm going to bribe you for your ideas... if you leave me a comment on this post with at least 3 ideas for a hair salon name your name will be entered in a draw for a surprise package of stamping goodies from me. I'll do the draw in one week. Now, let's hear your creative ideas!!

{ thanks nancy }

Good Morning!

Guess what I found in my mailbox this morning?! A gorgeous Lizzie Anne stamp set - my blog candy from Nancy! Thank you so much Nancy! I LOVE this stamp set even more in person! The packaging (CD case with full color insert) is awesome, too, and I love how the stamps are real rubber and they're on cushion and they're on cling already - so they're ready to go when you get them. PERFECT! I can tell I'm going to "need" many more Lizzie Anne stamp sets in the future... can you let my girls know that's what I'd like for Christmas? LOL

{ wow }

WOW! If you read this article how can you not sell all your punches and buy these?! I think I am 95% convinced LOL.

Does anyone know the cheapest place to get these nestabilites dies? I'm interested in buying basically the entire collection, so I need a good price!

Update: So, I just bought these from Urban Trends in Abbotsford! I was so excited when I found out she just got them in stock last night! It's nice not to have to order from the US and wait forever to get them in the mail.

I've been in love with this quilt for years and now I will finally get to make myself one! Rhonda also sent me this gorgeous fall card. The patterned layer is vellum - so nice! The raffia finishes the card off perfectly. Thanks for making my day!

{ playing with my new stamp set }

One of my most recent stamp purchases was the Big Bold Birthday set from Stampin' Up!. The main reason I bought this set was because I fell in love with this card by nitestamper on Splitcoast Stampers! I've copied her card except for a few changes (different patterned paper, different colored card stock & ink, different ribbon, etc, but over all the design is all hers!). I made 6 of these cards yesterday. Next time I make them I will resize things a bit so more of the background paper shows. I hate covering up cute background paper. It seems like such a waste!

The second card shown here is one that I copied from Kristina. I just love her style! You've got to check out her blog. I made 6 of these cards as well. It's nice to have a pile of cheery birthday cards on hand.
